Protesters in Johannesburg called for a boycott of the Miss Universe beauty pageant in Israel, voicing solidarity with Palestine, after the South African government withdrew support from the country’s own beauty queen, Lalela Mswane, for competing in the pageant.
Dozens took part in the protest, carrying flags and posters demanding a boycott of the beauty pageant in Israel. Some banners referred to the state of Israel as an ‘Apartheid system’ in the context of the settlement policy.
Relations between Israel and South Africa have been strained for many years, most recently in 2018 when Pretoria withdrew its ambassador in response to Israel’s crackdown on the Gaza border fence marches. Currently, South Africa is working with Algeria to prevent Israel from obtaining observer status at the African Union. South Africa’s government has repeatedly accused Israel of oppressing Palestinians with a system of ‘apartheid’, a term coined in South Africa to describe state-organised racial segregation and oppression.
