European and Asian countries scramble to tighten curbs as threat of new COVID-19 variant looms

코로나 재확산에 새 변이까지…전세계 초긴장

With a new variant from South Africa, countries around the world are scrambling to re-impose travel restrictions and strengthen prevention measures… back-pedaling from their so-called “Living With COVID” plans.
Our Han Seong-woo zooms in on how the international community is reacting to the crisis.
Countries in Europe and Asia tightened travel restrictions on Friday as a precaution against a new, possibly more vaccine-resistant and contagious COVID-19 variant from South Africa.
The European Union and India have announced stricter border controls while Britain has banned flights from South Africa and several neighboring countries.
The Netherlands has halted flights from the area as well… adding South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Namibia and Zimbabwe to its list of “high risk” countries.
Italy, meanwhile, has imposed an entry ban on those who have visited the region within the last fourteen days.
President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen tweeted on Friday that the Commission will propose, in close cooperation with Member States, to activate an emergency brake to stop air travel from the area.
On a similar note, Singapore’s health ministry said it would restrict arrivals from South Africa and nearby countries.
Jiji Press reports Japan has also tightened border restrictions while Taiwan’s planning to have travelers from “high risk” southern African countries stay at state-run quarantine facilities for two weeks.
Scientists are still assessing the new strain, which, those in South Africa say has a (quote) “very unusual constellation” of mutations.
The variant comes amid an already dire situation worldwide… with several countries pushing for lockdowns amid record-breaking resurgences.
Germany’s total COVID-19 death toll passed a hundred thousand on Thursday as the country added another 75-thousand new cases.
