AU asks G7 countries to support COVID-19 vaccine waiver

The African Union is asking G7 countries to support the initiative by South Africa and India that will enable Africa to begin manufacturing its own COVID-19 vaccines. The two countries are pushing for the World Trade Organisation to waive intellectual property rights to COVID -19 vaccines. The Chair of the AU commission Moussa Faki Mahamat says Africa is currently facing shortages in vaccine supply, partly because developed nations have ignored the plea that Africa made at the beginning of the pandemic – to be allowed to get equal access to vaccines at the same price as other nations. Coletta Wanjohi reports from Nairobi.
